In brief

Auriculotherapy at PULSE TCM stimulates specific points on the outer ear, most often with Vaccaria seed or bead plasters, and sometimes with fine needles. Your physician chooses points after pulse and tongue diagnosis. It may sit beside acupuncture or other care, and PLAY byEAR can extend gentle stimulation between clinic visits.

What it is

Ear points that mirror the body

Auriculotherapy, also called auricular acupoint pressure or ear stimulation, uses the ear as a microsystem. Points on the outer ear relate to body regions and functions. At PULSE it joins the plan only when the assessment points that way.

In TCM, health depends on the flow of qi through the channels. Many meridians pass near or through the ear. Stimulating selected points can support comfort when qi feels stuck, sleep is restless, or tension sits in the body. Modern maps also draw on neurological reflex ideas first organised by Paul Nogier. MOH-registered physicians decide if and when auriculotherapy belongs, and can point you to PULSE Signature for a premium auricular ritual or to PLAY byEAR on P:TTERN for between-visit seeds. The ear map, ten common concerns, and a home press sequence are on the auriculotherapy guide.

How it works

How auriculotherapy works

Classical TCM framing and what clinic practice describes physiologically, side by side, with a short evidence sketch below.

A TCM perspective

Qi, channels, and the ear map

The ear is treated as a microsystem that reflects the whole body, often pictured as an inverted fetus map. Stimulating a point aims to ease stagnation or unsettled spirit in the related region or function, while the broader pattern is still treated with acupuncture, herbs, or lifestyle advice.

A clinical perspective

Nerves and regulation

Outer-ear stimulation may influence branches of cranial nerves and autonomic tone. Research on auricular acupuncture and acupressure is growing for pain, sleep, and anxiety support, with stronger evidence in some conditions than others. We frame ear seeds as an adjunct, not a cure.

What research and practice help explain

A plain summary of auricular therapy literature, not a promise of outcome for every person.

  • Nogier and the ear microsystem Modern Western auricular maps grew from Paul Nogier's work on neurological correspondences between outer-ear zones and body regions. Clinic maps combine that lineage with classical Chinese ear points. [1]
  • Autonomic and reflex pathways Auricular stimulation has been studied for effects on sympathetic and parasympathetic balance. Findings vary by protocol; your physician interprets suitability for you. [2]
  • Sleep and pain adjunct research Systematic reviews of auricular acupuncture or seed attachment have explored primary insomnia and selected pain settings. Quality and results vary; more high-quality trials are still needed. [3]
  • Regulated practice in Singapore Care is delivered by TCM physicians registered with the Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioners Board under MOH. Placement is physician-indicated and personalised. [4]

Common concerns

Where ear seeds may sit in a care plan

Ear seeds and auricular stimulation are considered for selected patterns after consultation. Physicians treat patterns, not only disease names. The concerns below are common entry points and not exhaustive or guaranteed outcomes.

In TCM we may describe qi stagnation, restless spirit, or disharmony that shows up as tension, poor sleep, or cycle discomfort. Your physician will name the pattern clearly so ear points, if used, match that reading.

Pain & tension

  • Headache and migraine support*
  • Neck, shoulder, or back tension*
  • Chronic regional pain adjunct*
Pain & Injuries pathway

Sleep & stress

  • Difficulty falling or staying asleep*
  • Daytime tension and restlessness*
  • Mild anxiety-related tension*
Sleep & Stress pathway

* Supportive care for comfort and function within a broader plan. Red-flag emergencies and unexplained serious symptoms need Western medical care first.

Physician-guided auricular ear seed placement at PULSE

How we stimulate the ear

Clinic seeds, ear needles, or PLAY byEAR

All three share the same diagnostic groundwork. Your physician chooses plaster seeds, auricular needling, home care, or a mix when it fits your pattern.

  • Physician-placed ear seeds

Vaccaria seeds (王不留行籽) or small beads on hypoallergenic tape are placed on selected outer-ear points after diagnosis. You press them gently several times a day so stimulation continues between visits.

  • Auricular acupuncture

Fine sterile needles may be used on ear points when your physician wants a stronger or more precise stimulus, often alongside body acupuncture in the same session.

    About acupuncture
  • PLAY byEAR between visits

Our PLAY byEAR protocol extends gentle ear acupressure at home. Refills are available on P:TTERN, including options stocked in selected Guardian stores. Use physician guidance for point maps when you can.

Seeds sit on the outer ear, never in the canal. Mild tenderness or warmth when you press is common. Remove them if the skin becomes red, swollen, or itchy. For a premium sensory path at ION Orchard, see PULSE Signature.

Ear points or body acupuncture?

Both can sit in one plan. This is orientation after diagnosis, not a ranking of which is “better.”

  • Prefer auriculotherapy when…

You want ongoing, often needle-free stimulation on outer-ear points, including seeds you can press between visits.

  • Prefer body acupuncture when…

Channel and local body points are the main lever for your pattern, or you need a fuller needling session with ear work as an optional add-on.

Your visit

What to expect

Consultation first. Ear seeds or auricular needling only when they fit your plan.

  1. Consultation

Share history, pregnancy status, skin sensitivities, medications, and goals. First visits usually take 45–60 minutes.

  2. TCM diagnosis

Pulse, tongue, and symptom pattern guide whether auriculotherapy belongs and which ear points to use.

  3. Placement

The outer ear is cleaned and dried. Seeds or beads are taped on selected points, or fine needles are used when indicated. Same-side placement is common for unilateral pain.

  4. Home press & removal

Press each point about 10 times or for around 30 seconds, two to three times a day. Wear seeds about 3–7 days, then remove. Take them off sooner if irritation appears.

Comfort & safety

Gentle care with clear boundaries

Ear seeds are generally well tolerated when placed correctly. They are not appropriate on broken or infected skin. Tell your physician about adhesive allergies and pregnancy before placement.

  • Place seeds only on the outer ear, never inside the ear canal.
  • Remove immediately if you notice redness, swelling, tenderness that worsens, or itchiness.
  • Ask for latex-free tape if you have latex or adhesive sensitivity.
  • Do not apply over broken, infected, or irritated skin.
  • Pregnant or breastfeeding individuals should seek professional advice before home seeding protocols.
  • Mild tenderness when pressing a point is common; sharp pain or dizziness should be reported promptly.

From the clinic

  • Ear seeds are useful when I want ongoing, needle-free stimulation after the pattern is clear. They do not replace pulse, tongue, and a proper diagnosis, and they work best when patients know how to press and when to remove them.

FAQs

Auriculotherapy questions, answered

What ear seeds are, how they feel, safety, home care, and how we quote fees.

What is auriculotherapy?

Auriculotherapy stimulates specific points on the outer ear to support comfort and regulation. At PULSE this usually means Vaccaria seed or bead plasters, and sometimes fine needles, after a TCM consultation.

What are ear seeds?

Ear seeds are tiny Vaccaria seeds or metal or crystal beads on small adhesive plasters. They sit on the surface of the outer ear and do not pierce the skin. You press them gently to stimulate the point.

How do ear seeds work?

In TCM, ear points relate to body regions and functions through qi and channel correspondences. Clinically, stimulation may influence nerve pathways involved in pain and stress responses. Evidence varies by condition; your physician explains the fit for your pattern.

Do ear seeds hurt?

Placement is usually comfortable. Some points feel tender or warm when pressed, which is expected. Tell your physician if sensation feels sharp or unbearable.

How long do ear seeds stay on?

Most people wear them for about three to seven days, or as advised. They may loosen with showering or daily activity. Remove them after a week even if they are still attached.

Can I shower or exercise with ear seeds?

Yes. Pat the ear dry instead of rubbing. Avoid long soaks and vigorous towel friction so the adhesive stays in place.

What can ear seeds help with?

They may be included in plans for pain, sleep difficulty, stress-related tension, menstrual comfort, digestive unease, and other patterns your physician identifies. They support a plan; they do not cure disease on their own.

Are ear seeds safe?

They are generally safe when applied to intact outer-ear skin. Stop and remove them if irritation develops. Share adhesive allergies and pregnancy status before use. Seek medical care for unexplained or severe symptoms.

Can I apply ear seeds myself?

Clinic placement is ideal for first use. A step-by-step home protocol is in <a href="/bites/how-to-apply-ear-seeds/">How to apply ear seeds</a>, with the map and concerns on the <a href="/insights/auriculotherapy/">auriculotherapy guide</a>. PLAY byEAR kits include maps for home care. Incorrect placement is unlikely to cause serious harm but may reduce benefit. Remove seeds if the skin reacts.

How is clinic auriculotherapy different from PULSE Signature?

Standard clinic care places ear seeds or uses auricular needles within a regular consult. PULSE Signature at ION Orchard folds auriculotherapy into a premium Healing Loop with Meridian Light Therapy (AŌRA) and a more sensory room experience.

Where can I buy PLAY byEAR ear seeds?

PLAY byEAR Ear Seed Refills are sold on P:TTERN (pttern.com/products/pbe-ear-seeds), with selected options also available in Guardian stores. Retail packs are separate from clinic procedure fees.

How much does auriculotherapy cost at PULSE TCM?

Clinic fees are quoted by your attending physician after assessment. Consultation starts from $40. GST is separate. Retail PLAY byEAR refills have their own product pricing on P:TTERN.
