Acupressure for breast milk supply

Six points often taught for postpartum milk support: Ru Gen (ST18), Shan Zhong (CV17), Yin Ling Quan (SP9), Zu San Li (ST36), Tai Chong (LR3), and Feng Long (ST40). Match the set to your leading pattern.

In brief

After locating each point, use your thumb in a circular press for three to five minutes. ST18 and CV17 sit on the chest; SP9, ST36, and ST40 on the leg; LR3 on the top of the foot. Match points to Qi-Blood deficiency, Liver Qi stagnation, or phlegm-damp signs. Soft pressure only; stop over pain, rash, or infection.

Routine

The steps

  1. Ru Gen (ST18) · 3–5 minutes

In the fifth intercostal space, about four cun lateral to the anterior midline, directly below the nipple on the lower border of the breast. Circular thumb pressure may help promote supply and milk flow.

  2. Shan Zhong (CV17) · 3–5 minutes

On the anterior midline at the fourth intercostal space, midway between the nipples. Circular press to help regulate Qi and ease Liver Qi stagnation.

  3. Yin Ling Quan (SP9) · 3–5 minutes each leg

In the depression posterior and inferior to the medial tibial condyle, in the angle of the medial condyle and the posterior tibial border. Supports Spleen and helps move dampness when phlegm-damp blocks flow.

  4. Zu San Li (ST36) · 3–5 minutes each leg

Three cun (about four finger-widths) below the base of the patella, one finger-breadth lateral to the anterior tibial border. Supports Qi and Blood when deficiency leads the picture.

  5. Tai Chong (LR3) · 3–5 minutes each foot

On the foot about two finger-widths above the webbing between the big toe and the second toe. Helps regulate Liver Qi, ease stagnation, and clear Liver Fire when irritability and tender breasts dominate.

  6. Feng Long (ST40) · 3–5 minutes each leg

Eight cun above the tip of the external malleolus, two finger-breadths lateral to the anterior tibial border. Used when phlegm needs clearing beside a full but painless breast.
