Moxibustion therapy: uses and benefits

Mugwort heat on selected points warms the meridians and dispels cold-damp. A licensed physician gauges the distance and time so the warmth stays soothing.

In brief

Moxibustion (艾灸) warms selected points with mugwort (<em>Artemisia vulgaris</em>). Heat warms the meridians, moves qi-blood, and dispels cold-damp. Direct cones sit on the skin and come off before they burn down; an indirect stick is held 3–4 centimetres away. PULSE usually uses a protective box or smokeless stick. It suits cold or stagnant patterns: joints, women’s warming, low immunity or sluggish digestion. A licensed physician gauges the heat. A typical course is 12 sessions of 20–30 minutes.

01 · What it is

What moxibustion is

艾灸 · 艾绒 · 温经散寒 · 祛湿

Moxibustion (艾灸) is a TCM heat method: dried mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris, 艾草), prepared as 艾绒, is warmed on selected acupoints. The heat warms the meridians (温经), supports circulation, dispels cold and damp (散寒祛湿), and may support immunity.

Many people describe a warm, soothing sensation during and after a session. Mild redness at the point is common and usually fades within a few hours.

02 · How it is done

Direct vs indirect

There are two classic methods. Direct cones sit on the skin and are lifted before they burn down. Indirect sticks are held 3–4 centimetres away until the area reddens. A licensed physician watches the heat and gauges time and distance.

Direct, indirect, and clinic box heat
Method How it is done Why a physician
DirectMugwort cones on the skin. Cones are ignited after they are placed, then removed before they burn down to the skin. Timing is close. A physician lifts the cone before the heat becomes a burn.
Indirect stickStick held 3–4 centimetres away. The stick stays above the point for several minutes until the area turns red. Lower burn risk than direct cones. Distance and duration are judged against the skin response, not a fixed clock.
Moxa box / smokelessProtective box or smokeless stick. Heat sits in a box on the point, or a smokeless stick is held at a safe distance. This is the usual method at PULSE. The physician chooses box, stick, or warm-needle after pulse and tongue.

Moxibustion vs acupuncture

Needles stimulate a point mechanically. Moxa warms it. They often sit in the same plan. Warm-needle acupuncture places moxa on a needle so heat travels into the point.

Heat, needles, or both
Method What you feel When it sits in the plan
AcupunctureFine sterile needles. A dull ache, heaviness, or warmth at the point is common. The skin is pierced only at the point. Qi and blood movement, pain, and pattern work after pulse and tongue.
MoxibustionMugwort heat on or near the point. Deep, pleasant warmth. Indirect heat is held off the skin or placed in a box so it does not burn. Cold or stagnant patterns: stiff joints, chilly cycles, low yang.
Warm-needleMoxa on a needle. Needle sensation plus spreading warmth as the cone smoulders on the handle. When the pattern asks for heat deeper in the point, not only on the surface.

03 · Uses

What conditions it is used for

Moxibustion is usually chosen for cold or stagnant patterns, after pulse and tongue name the type.

Cold or stagnant patterns where moxa may sit in a plan
Cluster Typical uses TCM action
JointsCold in the channels. Joint pain and arthritic conditions, especially stiffness that worsens in cold or damp weather. 温经散寒: warm the meridians and dispel cold.
Women’s healthWarming support. Infertility, menstrual cramps, ovarian cysts, and breech births when the pattern reads cold or stagnant. 暖宫: warm the womb and move stagnant cold.
DeficiencyLow yang or sluggish function. Low immunity, sluggish digestion, and fluid retention when yang runs low. 补阳祛湿: support yang and move damp.

When to book for moxibustion

If joints stiffen in the cold, the cycle runs chilly, or digestion stays sluggish, a physician can name whether warming moxa belongs beside acupuncture. Bring whether you run heaty, and any pregnancy or period notes.

04 · Precautions

Precautions for moxibustion

Heat is matched to the pattern. These skips keep the warmth from landing on the wrong constitution.

1. Excess heat

Skip moxibustion when the body currently reads as excess heat, for example frequent thirst, a flushed face, or fever.

2. During menstruation

Warming during the period is used only when a physician specifically prescribes it for cramps. It is not a default on every cycle day.

3. Water after the session

Drink sufficient water after each treatment session so the warming work can settle.

05 · Course

How many sessions are required

Typically, one course comprises 12 sessions of 20–30 minutes each. The physician advises according to the pattern and how the body responds.

After a session most people feel relaxed and physically warmer. Mild redness from increased circulation usually fades within about an hour.

Stay warm. Skip a cold shower and strong air-conditioning for about four hours when you can. Drink warm water. Avoid icy drinks or very cold raw foods right after, so they do not undo the warming intent of the session.

FAQs

Questions, answered

Side effects, pregnancy, home kits, smell, and insurance before a first warming visit.

What are the side effects of moxibustion?

When a licensed TCM physician administers moxibustion, side effects are usually mild. Temporary redness or a slight flush where the heat was applied typically fades within a few hours. Traditional mugwort smoke can leave an earthy, herbal scent on hair or clothes. At PULSE, smokeless moxa and ventilated rooms are the usual setup.

How long does it take to see results from moxibustion?

Timeframe depends on the condition. Mild menstrual cramps or sudden muscle stiffness may ease after one session. Chronic arthritis, prolonged fatigue, or fertility support usually need cumulative sessions. Many people notice change within 4 to 6 sessions of a recommended 12-session plan.

Is moxibustion safe during pregnancy?

Moxibustion on the lower abdomen or lower back is generally avoided during pregnancy. One documented exception is turning a breech baby: indirect moxa on Zhiyin (BL67) on the little toe, usually around weeks 33 to 35, only when a certified TCM physician performs or prescribes it.

What does burning moxa (mugwort) smell like?

Burning mugwort has a distinct, pungent, earthy aroma. People often compare it to strong sage or incense. Traditional moxa can linger on hair and clothes. PULSE primarily uses smokeless moxibustion, with ventilated rooms, so the visit stays comfortable.

Can I do moxibustion at home by myself?

Moxa sticks and home kits are sold in stores, but DIY moxibustion is not recommended for beginners. Without training there is a risk of burns. Heat on the wrong points, or on a body currently in excess heat, can worsen symptoms. A licensed physician should read pulse and tongue before any at-home care.

Is moxibustion covered by health insurance in Singapore?

Coverage for TCM treatments, including moxibustion and acupuncture, depends on the personal or corporate policy. Many Singapore plans now include a TCM allowance. Check with the insurer for specific limits.

Does moxibustion burn?

Indirect moxibustion should not burn the skin. The stick is held a few centimetres away, or the heat sits in a protective box. You should feel deep, pleasant warmth. Direct cones are lifted before they reach the skin. A physician watches the colour of the point so the heat stays soothing.

How is moxibustion different from acupuncture?

Acupuncture uses fine needles for mechanical stimulation at points. Moxibustion uses mugwort heat. They are often used together. Warm-needle acupuncture places moxa on a needle to send deeper warmth into a point when the pattern asks for it.
