What do heaty and cooling mean in TCM?
Yin · Yang · 上火
Heaty and cooling name how food and habits land in your body after you eat, not whether a dish is served hot or iced. Yin (cooling, quieter) and Yang (heaty, active) sit in balance in TCM.
- Heaty (阳盛则热): excess Yang. When Yang overpowers Yin, the body can feel overheated, dry, and agitated.
- Cooling (阴盛则寒): excess Yin, or not enough Yang. Metabolic warmth runs low, with coldness, fatigue, and sluggish digestion.
- 上火 (shàng huǒ): the everyday Singapore phrase for heaty signs such as a sore throat or mouth ulcers.
Green bean soup is often served hot, yet it still has cooling properties that can clear excess heat. Iced drinks can feel refreshing and still add cold load if your Yang is already weak. The thermal nature is the after-effect, not the thermometer reading on the bowl.
