1. Difficulty getting erections
Erections are hard to initiate even with desire and stimulation.

ED is not only an “older man’s” concern. In Singapore, stress, iced drinks, vessels, and organ patterns can stack in younger men too. TCM names the pattern before care.
In brief
In TCM, erectile dysfunction often reflects Kidney Yang deficiency, Liver Qi stagnation or Dampness-Heat, Heart-Spleen / Qi and Blood deficiency, or Qi and Blood blockage rather than a single local fault. Care starts with pulse and tongue, then may include acupuncture, herbal medication, and kitchen self-care matched to the pattern. This is educational support beside Western assessment when vessels, nerves, or hormones need checking.
Erectile dysfunction (ED) is often framed as an older man’s issue because prevalence rises with age as testosterone can fall. In Singapore clinic, younger men also present when chronic stress, iced drinks, late nights, vessel load, and lifestyle cold stack. ED can interfere with sexual activity and with quality of life. TCM does not treat the erection in isolation. It names the organ and Qi-Blood pattern underneath, then matches care.
01 · Symptoms
ED is the inability to achieve or keep an erection firm enough through sexual activity. Physicians also ask about nocturnal penile tumescence (morning wood).
Erections are hard to initiate even with desire and stimulation.
Firmness is not enough for comfortable intercourse, or fades early.
An erection starts, then softens before activity finishes.
Nocturnal penile tumescence signals healthy blood and nerve supply. Losing morning erections can be an early clue that vessels, nerves, or deeper patterns need assessment.
02 · Causes
ED was once blamed mainly on psychology. Physical and psychological factors often combine. In some men, erectile change is one of the first signs of an underlying medical problem.
03 · Singapore
Lifestyle load
A hot climate does not protect Kidney Yang or Liver Qi. Everyday habits often stack the patterns named below.
04 · TCM view
TCM reads the body as an integrated whole. When Yin and Yang stay balanced, function holds. The Kidneys and Liver sit close to erection physiology; Qi and Blood must circulate freely. Weakness or blockage in any of these areas can contribute.
| Pattern | Clues | May help |

| Kidney Yang deficiencyWarmth and reproductive drive run low. |

05 · Kidney
Kidney Yang · essence
Kidney Yang acts as the warming boost that helps achieve erections. Excess sexual activity, long cold exposure, and over-consuming cold food and drinks can weaken Kidney Yang and contribute to ED.
06 · Liver Qi
Liver Qi stagnation
The Liver governs emotion and the smooth circulation of Qi, Blood, and fluids. The Liver meridian passes through and surrounds the genitals, so free flow supports erection. Under-expressed or over-expressed emotion, especially anger, can stagnate Liver Qi and contribute to ED.
07 · Dampness-Heat
Dampness-Heat
A diet heavy in spicy, oily, or sweet food can generate Dampness-Heat. When it obstructs the Liver meridian and pelvic channels, erection quality can fall even when Kidney Yang is not the main story.
08 · Qi and Blood
Qi-Blood · Heart · Spleen
Qi and Blood are the fundamental elements involved in generating erections. Chronic disease or injury can damage vessels and lead to Qi stagnation with Blood stasis. Overthinking and overwork can exhaust the Spleen and Heart, which generate Qi and Blood. Both paths can present as ED even though the causes differ.
09 · Beside Western care
Co-care
TCM does not replace lipid, glucose, hormone, or urology work-ups. Phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) medicines and specialist plans stay GP or urologist decisions. Pattern-led acupuncture and herbs can sit beside that care when both teams know your full medicine list. Do not stop prescribed drugs on your own.
10 · Clinic care
After consultation and assessment, a physician names the underlying imbalances and builds a plan. Care is personalised; there is no single ED protocol.
Needling selected points aims to balance Qi and Blood and address the pattern contributing to ED. Clinic plans are matched to pulse and tongue. Systematic reviews of acupuncture for ED report mixed, often low-certainty findings, with some signal as adjunctive care especially in psychogenic presentations. Outcomes vary; acupuncture is not a guaranteed fix and sits beside Western care when vessels, nerves, or hormones need checking.
Herbal formulas may be prescribed when the pattern fits. Some herbs are traditionally used to tonify Kidney energy. That is pattern-led prescribing, not a promise of stronger sexual function. Do not self-prescribe strong tonics beside blood thinners or other medicines without guidance.
Next step
Book with a PULSE physician. Bring medicines, recent blood work if you have it, and how long symptoms have been present.
11 · What may help
Kitchen recipes support the named pattern between visits. They do not replace a consult.
Tea
Cuscuta, palmleaf raspberry, goji, magnolia berry, and plantain seed for Kidney Yang patterns with cold limbs and low drive.
About two to three times a week. Skip if you run strongly heaty.
Make the cuscuta goji tea
Tea
Jasmine, tangerine pith, and rose when Liver Qi feels stuck with irritability or partner-linked erection change.
Honey optional. About three to five times a week.
Make the jasmine rose tea
Soup
Lotus leaf and Chinese barley simmered when Dampness-Heat shows as heavy limbs, amber urine, or scrotal dampness.
About three to five times a week. Ease off if stools run loose.
Make the lotus barley soup
Tea
American ginseng with red dates and longan when Heart-Spleen / Qi and Blood deficiency shows as fatigue and pale complexion.
About two to three times a week. Ask before use if you run heaty.
Make the ginseng date longan tea
Tea
Red sage with tangerine pith when Qi and Blood blockage sits with chronic disease history or a dark tongue.
Ask first if you take blood thinners. About two to three times a week.
Make the danshen pith tea12 · Self-press
Guan Yuan (CV4), Tai Xi (KD3), and San Yin Jiao (SP6) suit most constitutions. Add pattern points when your signs match.
ED pattern self-press
Press and circle two to three minutes, twice daily, until a dull soreness appears. Pattern add-ons cover Liver Qi, Damp-Heat, Qi-Blood deficiency, and blockage.
Press the ED points13 · When to book
Book a TCM consult when erectile change persists, morning wood fades, or pattern signs stack. Seek urgent Western care for chest pain, sudden neurological symptoms, trauma, or severe pain. Tell both teams about all medicines before herbs.

FAQs
Common questions before a first men's health visit for erectile concerns.
TCM reads ED as a whole-body pattern. Common maps include Kidney Yang deficiency, Liver Qi stagnation or Dampness-Heat along the Liver meridian, Heart and Spleen / Qi and Blood deficiency, and Qi and Blood blockage after chronic disease. Pulse and tongue decide the plan.
Nocturnal penile tumescence (morning wood) often signals healthy blood and nerve supply. Losing NPT can be an early clue that vessels, nerves, or deeper organ patterns need assessment. It is a prompt to seek care, not a diagnosis by itself.
Stress often shows as Liver Qi stagnation: erections may appear during sleep but fail with a partner, with irritability or frequent sighing. Stress can also sit with physical vessel or metabolic disease. A physician sorts the mix.
Clinic acupuncture aims to balance Qi and Blood and address the named pattern after assessment. Systematic reviews report mixed, often low-certainty evidence, with some adjunctive signal especially in psychogenic presentations. It is not a guaranteed fix and does not replace urology or cardiology care when those teams are needed.
They are educational kitchen recipes matched to patterns. Skip or modify if you have herb sensitivities, take blood thinners (especially with Danshen), run strongly heaty on warming brews, or have a prescribed diet. Ask before daily use.
See Western care promptly for chest pain, sudden neurological signs, trauma, severe pain, or when ED arrives with diabetes, hypertension, or known heart disease. TCM can sit beside PDE5 or specialist plans after both teams know your medicines. Do not stop prescribed drugs on your own.
Common clues include lower libido, cold limbs, intolerance to cold, lower back ache, weak lower limbs, tinnitus or dizziness, tiredness, and more frequent urination. Clusters matter more than any single sign.
Some herbs are traditionally used to tonify Kidney energy when the pattern fits. That is pattern-led prescribing, not a guarantee of stronger erection or sexual performance. Self-prescribing strong tonics is not advised.
