Two desk moves when stress tightens the shoulders

Long sitting plus fight-or-flight load keeps neck and shoulder tissue braced. A short shoulder drop and a chair twist help the same day you feel the clamp.

In brief

Two chair moves often used when desk posture and stress tighten the neck and shoulders. Shoulder drop: raise both shoulders toward the ears, then drop them low five times, rotate forward and back five times each, two to three rounds a day. Chair twist: turn from the hip toward the backrest, hold ten seconds each side, two to three rounds a day. Stay kind. Ease off if pain sharpens.

The steps

  1. Shoulder drop

Sit upright with hands on your lap and feet shoulder-width apart. Raise both shoulders high toward the ears, then drop them as low as you can in one motion. Repeat five times. Rotate the shoulders in a circle forward five times and backward five times. Repeat the whole set two to three times a day.

  2. Chair twist

Sit upright. Turn from the hip toward the right to face the back of the chair. Hold the backrest with the right hand and place the left hand on the outside of the right knee. Hold ten seconds, then repeat on the left. Do two to three rounds a day.

FAQs

Quick questions

How often should I do these desk moves?

Two to three rounds a day is the educational cadence from the source routine. Keep the range kind. If neck or shoulder pain stays for weeks, book rather than forcing extra load.

Should the shoulder drop hurt?

A brief release after the drop is expected. Sharp pain means lower the range and stop. The move is a raise-and-drop, not a forced shrug hold.
