Press GB20, SJ23, and SJ21 for migraine

Feng Chi (GB20) at the nape, Si Zhu Kong (SJ23) at the outer eyebrow end, and Er Men (SJ21) in front of the ear. Match the point to where the pain sits. Soft locate-and-press alongside clinic care.

In brief

Three educational head points for migraine self-press: Feng Chi (GB20 · 风池) in the hollows at the base of the skull for general migraine pain; Si Zhu Kong (SJ23 · 丝竹空) at the outer end of the eyebrow when the eyes are involved; and Er Men (SJ21 · 耳门) in the depression in front of the ear opening when the ears ache with the attack. Circle each side kindly for about one minute. Stop on sharp pain, broken skin, or sudden neurological red flags. This is short self-care between visits, not care for worst-ever headache or stroke signs.

Routine

The steps

  1. Feng Chi (GB20 · 风池)

Cup the hands behind the head. Place the thumbs in the hollows at the base of the skull, in the depression between the trapezius and sternocleidomastoid, level with the top of the ear. Circle gently for about one minute each side. Often used for generic migraine pain and wind invading the nape.

  2. Si Zhu Kong (SJ23 · 丝竹空)

Find the depression at the lateral end of the eyebrow, in the hollow where the brow ends. Circle softly for about one minute each side. Useful when migraine pain sits with the eyes or brow line.

  3. Er Men (SJ21 · 耳门)

With the mouth slightly open, feel the depression in front of the ear opening, just above the tragus. Press or circle gently for about one minute each side when the ears feel involved during a migraine.

  4. Stop cues

Ease off if the press turns sharp, the skin is broken, or numbness spreads. Seek urgent help for sudden worst-ever headache, one-sided weakness, vision loss, fever with stiff neck, or headache after trauma.

Try today Locate Feng Chi at the nape, then Si Zhu Kong at the outer brow, then Er Men in front of the ear when the attack matches those sites.

FAQs

Quick questions

Which point should I start with during a migraine?

Start with Feng Chi (GB20) for general migraine pain. Add Si Zhu Kong (SJ23) when the eyes or brow ache, and Er Men (SJ21) when the ears feel involved. You do not need all three every time.

Where is Feng Chi (GB20)?

In the hollows at the base of the skull, between the trapezius and sternocleidomastoid, roughly level with the top of the ear. Cup the hands behind the head and place the thumbs in those depressions.

Where is Si Zhu Kong (SJ23)?

In the depression at the lateral end of the eyebrow. Soft circles only; keep pressure off the eyeball.

Where is Er Men (SJ21)?

In the depression in front of the ear opening, just above the tragus. Opening the mouth slightly can make the hollow easier to feel.

When should I seek urgent care instead of self-press?

Seek urgent help for sudden worst-ever headache, fever with stiff neck, vision loss, weakness on one side, confusion, collapse, or headache after trauma.
