Find Zu San Li (ST36) below the outer kneecap

足三里 · Leg Three Miles sits on the Stomach meridian, three cun below the outer kneecap beside the shinbone. A classic home press when lethargy and thin everyday vitality stack.

In brief

Zu San Li (足三里, ST36) sits on the anterolateral lower leg, three cun below the kneecap (about four finger-widths under the outer eye of the knee), one finger-width lateral to the tibial crest. Either leg works. Massage with a fingertip until you feel a dull soreness, then keep that pressure while rotating for three to five minutes. Repeat on the other side. Optional: a moxibustion pad or stick moxa on the point if you already use them at home. This Stomach-channel He-sea point is often called a longevity point for everyday immunity and energy support. Stop if pain sharpens.

Point guide

Find & press

  1. Measure below the outer kneecap

Sit with the leg relaxed and the knee slightly bent. Find the outer depression just below the kneecap (the outer eye of the knee). Stack four fingers downward from that dent. The point sits near the lower edge of that stack, one finger-width outside the sharp tibial crest, in the soft muscle belly.

  2. Finger-press to dull soreness

Massage the point with a fingertip until you feel a dull, slight soreness (酸胀). Keep the pressure kind. Sharp shooting pain means ease off and relocate the hollow beside the bone, not on it.

  3. Rotate 3–5 minutes, both legs

Maintain that pressure while rotating your finger on the point for three to five minutes. Then repeat on the other leg. Optional: place a moxibustion pad or use stick moxa on the point if you already practise home moxa safely.

  4. Stop cues

Ease off if the press feels sharp, numb, or wrong. Mild ache that eases on release is common; sharp pain is a stop signal. Do not burn the skin with moxa.

FAQs

Quick questions

Where is the Zu San Li (ST36) acupuncture point?

On the anterolateral lower leg, three cun below the kneecap. From the outer depression under the kneecap, measure about four finger-widths down, then one finger-width lateral to the tibial crest. Feel for a tender hollow in the muscle beside the shinbone.

How long should I press Zu San Li, and should it hurt?

Massage with a fingertip to a dull soreness, then rotate for three to five minutes on each leg. Sharp pain, shooting tingling, or numbness means ease off.

Why is Zu San Li called a longevity acupoint?

In TCM, ST36 is the Stomach He-sea point, often used to tonify Qi and support digestion and everyday resistance. Clinic teaching sometimes calls it a longevity point for those tonifying uses. Home press is a short habit between visits, not a diagnosis or a guarantee of longevity.

Can I use moxibustion on Zu San Li at home?

Yes, if you already use a moxibustion pad or stick moxa safely. Keep heat at comfortable warmth, not blistering, and stay clear of broken skin. Ask a physician before new moxa habits in pregnancy.

Can I press both legs, and which side first?

Yes. Either leg works. Press one side for three to five minutes, then the other. Start with whichever shin is easier to reach.
