TCM perspective: how diet and certain foods can cause acne

Heaty meals, icy drinks, and high-GI staples can show as acne. TCM reads that load as internal heat, dampness, or a weak Spleen in the zang-fu organs.

In brief

In TCM, acne is clogged follicles with excess sebum and internal heat, dampness, or a weak Spleen showing on the skin. Spicy, oily, or sweet foods generate dampness-heat that steams to the face. Icy drinks weaken the Spleen into cystic spots. High-GI staples and omega-6 oils add inflammation. Winter melon soup, barley-mung dessert, and honeysuckle-white chrysanthemum tea support a mostly cooling week. A tea after one spicy plate does not undo the meal.

01 · How acne forms

Western sebum load, TCM internal heat

Pores connect to oil glands through follicles. Those glands produce sebum. When excess sebum builds up, it clogs follicles with dead skin cells, hair, and bacteria. As the bacteria multiply, they cause infection and inflammation, creating a pimple. TCM reads the same spots as internal disharmony reaching the skin.

02 · Three internal causes

Heat, dampness, and a weak Spleen

Food and drink affect the zang-fu organs and shape constitution. Acne here is read in three ways. Mixed pictures are common. Pulse and tongue name the pattern so food can match it. Lesion shape and landing zone are named on the three clinic patterns and the face map.

Three TCM diet causes of acne
Cause Typical acne May help
Lung heat and windA heaty constitution, especially Lung heat, meets external wind. Heat travels upward to the face as red papules or pustules that may itch Honeysuckle and white chrysanthemum tea
Dampness-heatSpicy, oily, or heavily flavoured food generates dampness-heat in the stomach and intestines. Redness, swelling, inflammation, and pus; damp heat travels upward like steam Chinese barley and green bean dessert
Weak SpleenThe Spleen transports fluids. When it is weak, fluids stagnate. Stasis forms dampness and phlegm, then heat, as deep cystic acne Cooling winter melon soup

Lung · wind

Lung heat and wind

Heat travels up to the face

A heaty constitution, especially Lung heat, meets external wind. Heat then travels upward and erupts as acne.

Stomach · intestines

Dampness-heat

Steam to the face

Spicy, oily, or heavily flavoured food generates dampness-heat in the stomach and intestines. That heat travels upward like steam and affects the face.

Spleen · fluids

Weak Spleen

Fluids stagnate into cystic spots

When the Spleen cannot move fluids, stasis forms dampness and phlegm, then heat. That picture often shows as deep cystic acne.

03 · Trigger foods

Heaty foods and other triggers

There is a saying that mirrors “you are what you eat”: food and drink affect the zang-fu organs and shape constitution. To ease the internal load that shows as acne, ease off foods that feed a heaty constitution, dampness-heat, or a weakened Spleen.

Foods that can feed acne in TCM
Group What it tends to do Foods
Heaty foods that generate dampness-heatThese foods induce redness, swelling, inflammation, and pus. Dampness-heat in the stomach and intestines, steaming to the face
  • Meats and dairy: mutton, milk, cheese
  • Spices and aromatics: curry, chilli, ginger, onion, garlic, cinnamon, star anise, pepper, leeks, chives
  • Snacks: oily and deep-fried foods, biscuits, cookies, chips
  • Sweets and fruit: sugar, sweetened drinks, durian, jackfruit, longan, lychee, rambutan, mango
  • Beverages: alcohol, coffee
Foods that weaken the SpleenPhlegm-dampness tends to show as stubborn nodules and cystic acne. Fluids stagnate; dampness and phlegm accumulate
  • Ice, ice cream, and chilled drinks
  • Chilled or raw fruits and vegetables
  • Excessively oily or heavy-tasting dishes
High-GI and omega-6 rich foodsModern studies align with TCM on hormone load and inflammation. High-GI foods and dairy can interfere with hormone secretion; excess omega-6 can induce inflammation
  • High GI: white rice, porridge or congee, white bread, cake, potatoes, fries, sweet potatoes, watermelon, pineapple
  • High omega-6: peanuts, walnuts, sunflower seeds, tofu, safflower oil, canola oil, corn oil

04 · Common questions

Coffee, ginger, and cooling tea

Heaty · warming · weekly balance

Coffee is generally heaty. Ginger and cinnamon warm like chilli. A cooling tea after one spicy plate does not undo the meal.

Coffee, ginger, and cooling tea
Question TCM read What to do
CoffeeGenerally heaty and stimulating. Can redden Lung heat or Stomach heat already on the face Ease off, or swap some cups for green tea or chrysanthemum tea, when heat is the named pattern
Ginger and cinnamonWarming spices on the heaty list. They add to the same load as chilli; they are not a separate named acne cause Ease off when redness, swelling, or pus is already in front of you
Cooling tea after chilliDoes not undo a heaty meal. TCM looks at the week’s food, not one tea after a spicy plate If you run heaty, aim for about 70 percent of the week as neutral or cooling foods

05 · What may help

Cooling foods that clear heat

Cooling · dampness-draining

Foods with cooling and dampness-removal properties are used to clear internal heat. If you run heaty, most of the week should be cooling or neutral.

Clinic care

Match food to the pattern

A food chart sketches a lean. Pulse and tongue name whether heat, dampness, or a weak Spleen is in front of you, and whether herbs or acupuncture belong beside the pots.

06 · Daily tips

Daily tips for acne prevention and management

Food is one load. Skin care, hygiene, climate, and stress sit beside it.

1. Skincare routine

Wash your face twice a day and moisturise. Do not over-cleanse, as this dries the skin and can worsen acne. Always remove makeup before sleeping.

2. Hygiene

Refrain from touching your face. Wash hands frequently. Wash pillowcases, face towels, and face masks regularly.

3. Product choice

Choose non-comedogenic makeup. If you have oily skin, opt for water or gel-based products to prevent clogged pores.

4. Lifestyle

Keep cool and dry in hot, humid climates; humidity feeds dampness. Avoid excessive sun exposure. Try wearing loose clothing if you have body acne.

5. Stress management

Manage anxiety, as it increases cortisol and adrenaline, which can exacerbate breakouts. Constraint also drives heat upward.

6. Never pick

Do not scratch or burst pimples. This drives heat deeper, causing more blockages and scarring.

FAQs

Acne diet questions

Common questions before you change food, combine care, or book a first visit.

How long does it take to see results from TCM acne treatments?

TCM focuses on the internal pattern behind the breakouts, not only a topical fix. Some people notice less redness and inflammation within 2 to 4 weeks. A full skin turnover cycle takes about 28 days. For chronic or cystic acne, a consistent plan of diet, herbal medicine, and acupuncture often shows clearer change within 3 to 6 months.

Is coffee considered a "heaty" drink that causes breakouts?

In TCM, coffee is generally warm or heaty and stimulating. If you already lean toward Lung heat or Stomach heat, a lot of coffee can add to that load and show as red, angry spots. Physicians often suggest easing off, or swapping some cups for green tea or chrysanthemum tea, when heat is the named pattern.

Can I combine TCM with my Western dermatology treatments for acne?

Often yes, when both clinicians know the full list. Dermatology creams manage surface bacteria and sebum. TCM works internally on heat, dampness, and digestion. Tell both your dermatologist and your TCM physician about every medicine, supplement, and herbal formula you take, so interactions can be watched.

How exactly does acupuncture help clear hormonal and cystic acne?

Acupuncture is often used alongside herbal medicine for acne. Fine needles at named points may help settle systemic inflammation, support hormone rhythm, and improve local circulation while active spots settle. It is one part of a pattern-led plan, not a standalone cure.

Can I eat "cooling" foods to cancel out "heaty" meals?

A cooling tea after one spicy plate does not cancel the meal. TCM looks at weekly balance. If you run heaty, aim for about 70 percent of the week's intake as neutral or cooling foods, such as leafy greens and mung beans, rather than trying to neutralise each heaty dish.

How long does a "TCM Acne Detox" take to show results on the skin?

There is no separate detox product. Skin change still follows the 28-day turnover cycle. Many people notice less redness within 2 to 4 weeks of dietary changes. Deep dampness or hormonal cystic acne often needs about 3 months of consistent food discipline and herbal support.
