01 · Why breakouts
Skin as a signal of internal disharmony
Lung · Stomach · Blood · Qi · Phlegm
When problems show on the skin, TCM often reads a deeper imbalance. Lesion shape, colour, and where spots land help name the pattern so herbs and acupuncture points can match it.
| Pattern | Typical picture | May help |
|---|---|---|
| Lung HeatHeat trapped in the Lung channel. | Red papules or pustules that may itch or hurt; dry, inflamed skin, often forehead and lower cheeks | Clear Lung heat; chrysanthemum or honeysuckle tea; points and herbs after pulse and tongue |
| Stomach / Intestinal HeatDigestive heat rising to the face. | Diet-linked flares with thirst or constipation; mid-face and nose often track Stomach Fire | Cool the Middle; ease spicy, fried, and highly processed load; mung bean soup when heat fits |
| Blood HeatHeat riding the Blood. | Hotter, angrier red flares that feel widespread when Blood Heat leads | Cool and clear Blood Heat under physician guidance; needles and herbs match the picture |
| Qi-Blood stagnationStuck Qi and Blood under the skin. | Stubborn, slower-moving spots; stress and cycle rhythm often sit underneath | Move Qi and Blood; acupuncture cadence timed to ovulation and pre-menses when cycle flares lead |
| Phlegm-Blood stasisPhlegm and Blood stuck together. | Deep cystic or nodular spots that heal slowly; oily skin around mouth, chin, and jaw | Transform phlegm and invigorate Blood; barley-mung or damp-draining pots when damp-heat fits |
Genetics, digestion, skincare products, environment, and emotion can all stack the load. When balance returns, bowel sluggishness, excess thirst, oiliness, and cycle-linked flares often ease with the skin.
Where spots land is one clue beside pulse and tongue. See the TCM acne face map for forehead, nose, cheek, and chin zones. Diet heat is a frequent load; see how certain foods can cause acne.
