What a frozen shoulder is
冻结肩 · 五十肩 · adhesive capsulitis
Combing hair, dressing, or reaching a high shelf becomes hard when the shoulder locks and hurts. That picture is 冻结肩, also called 五十肩, the fifty-year shoulder. Western medicine names it adhesive capsulitis: pain, stiffness, and a restricted range in the joint.
It often appears with no associated injury. It usually affects people between 40 and 60, and it is twice as common in women as in men.
The smooth tissues around the joint become inflamed, thicken, and tighten. Scar tissue develops over time and range of motion drops. A rotator cuff injury, tendinitis, or long-term immobility of the joint can lead to frozen shoulder too.
